We have held our native title for nearly 20 years. Protecting Muntulgura Guruma country on behalf of our members is the principal objective of the Wintawari Guruma Aboriginal Corporation. Me and my fellow directors have been handed down a unique cultural legacy from our old people. Our job is to preserve this legacy and pass it on to the future generations of Muntulgura Guruma People.
 
Protecting country is a difficult task. Muntulgura Guruma country is rich in minerals and resources that mining companies want to extract. Rio Tinto and Fortescue have major operations within our determination area, and this puts pressure on the environment that we want to protect. We acknowledge the benefit that responsible mining development can bring to our community and to state and commonwealth governments, but we do not accept development of our country at the cost of our unique cultural heritage and the pristine environment.
 
The Board of Directors spend significant amounts of their time meeting with mining companies, and we constantly challenge these companies to do better, and develop and close their mines in a more sustainable way. I acknowledge the directors’ efforts in contributing their time to meet our objectives and thank them for it.
